Common Cardiovascular Diseases

Make an Appointment

Heart disease is still the leading cause of death worldwide. Given the prevalence of these conditions, a list of cardiovascular diseases can assist someone in determining which risk factors they or their loved ones may have. Armed with a basic understanding of the five most common cardiovascular diseases, you may be able to modify your health and lifestyle to avoid future heart-related health complications.

Here’s a list of common cardiovascular diseases:

  • Heart Attack

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, is usually at the top of the list of cardiovascular diseases. A heart attack occurs when the heart muscle is deprived of the oxygen it requires to function. This occurs because the blood flow delivering oxygen has been significantly reduced or has completely stopped. This is due to atherosclerosis, or the gradual buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries, which includes fat, cholesterol, and other substances. Blood clots can form around the plaque, slowing or blocking blood flow and resulting in a heart attack.

  • Stroke

Stroke is classified as heart disease because it affects blood flow. A stroke, on the other hand, is caused by problems with blood flow to the brain rather than the heart. Ischemic strokes account for 87 per cent of all strokes and occur when a blood vessel that delivers blood and oxygen to the brain becomes blocked. Without blood and oxygen, parts of the brain can be damaged or die if not treated promptly. Aside from blockages, hemorrhagic strokes can be caused by a vascular malformation or abnormal growth of brain blood vessels.

  • Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure, often known as heart failure, is a condition when the heart is unable to pump blood as effectively as it should. As the name implies, it does not imply that the heart has completely stopped beating. The heart continues to pump blood, but not at a fast enough rate to keep the body running. Untreated heart failure can cause fatigue and shortness of breath, which can make everyday activities like walking or climbing stairs difficult.

  • Arrhythmia

A heart arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm: too slow, too fast, or with an irregular beat or tempo. Without proper rhythm, the heart does not function properly. The heart may not be able to pump enough blood to other organs to deliver oxygen and nutrients.

  • Heart Valve Complications

Heart valve complications, like arrhythmias, can encompass a wide range of abnormalities. Stenosis occurs when the valves in the heart do not open sufficiently to allow blood to flow normally. Regurgitation occurs when the heart valves fail to close properly, allowing blood to leak through. Heart valves, like the arteries in your heart, must function properly to avoid life-threatening complications.
